The Capital University volleyball team opens postseason play on Tuesday evening in an Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament at cross-town rival Otterbein. First service is set for 7:30 p.m. at the Rike Center in Westerville, Ohio.

Road to the OAC Tournament

Capital (11-19 overall, 3-6 OAC) earned the No. 6 seed in the conference tournament, notching three wins in OAC play over the course of the 2014 regular season.

After recording eight wins in non-conference action, the Crusaders began conference play against Otterbein on Sept. 30, falling 3-2 in a hard fought match at the Capital Center.

The Crusaders initial OAC victory came in a 3-0 set sweep of Wilmington on Oct. 14, while they picked up their second conference win just two matches later in a 3-2 defeat of Marietta.

Capital's final three matches of the regular season featured one win and a pair of losses, with the victory coming in the regular season finale at Baldwin Wallace this past Saturday.

In the match, the Crusaders jumped out to a 2-0 set advanatage over the Yellow Jackets, winning by scores of 25-18 and 25-21, before surrendering two straight sets to their opposition, tying the match at two sets apiece.

The fifth and final set featured a rebound performance for Capital, as they defeated Baldwin Wallace in convincing fashion, 15-7.

Otterbein (16-13 overall, 7-2 OAC) received the No. 3 seed in the OAC Tournament after posting seven wins in nine matches during its conference regular season schedule.

The Cardinals opened up the season with four wins in their first five matches, before dropping multiple contests to nationally ranked opponents such as No. 1 Calvin, No. 5 California Lutheran, No. 10 Washington (St. Louis), and No. 23 Depauw University.

However, those setbacks clearly helped prepare Otterbein for conference play, as the Cardinals won their first two matches in the OAC, including five straight victories by scores of 3-1 or better.

Last Meeting

The last meeting between Capital and Otterbein came on Sept. 30 at the Capital Center, as the Cardinals proved victorious in a five set match.

After swapping wins through the first two sets, the Crusaders took a 2-1 set advantage over the Cardinals with a 25-22 victory in set three.

Otterbein then battled back to tie the match at two sets apiece with a 25-19 win in set four, forcing a fifth and decisive set. In set five, both teams went back and forth in the early going, before the Cardinals pulled ahead for good, taking the set and the match with a 15-12 win in set five.

Familiar Foes in Postseason Play

Dating back to the 2009 season, Otterbein has won nine straight meetings against Capital, including a pair of OAC Tournament matchups.

Both teams are quite familiar with one another in postseason play, having competed against each other in three of the last five conference tournaments, all of which have been won by Otterbein in the quarterfinals.
