COLUMBUS – The Capital University volleyball team picked up its second Ohio Athletic Conference victory of the season on Tuesday night, defeating Marietta, 3-2, at the Captial Center.
Capital (10-17 overall, 2-4 OAC) opened up the match with a convincing 25-13 win in set one, recording 14 kills and only six errors on 36 total attacks.
The Pioneers then battled back in set two, jumping out to a 4-0 advantage early on, prompting a Capital timeout.
However, the Crusaders managed to manufacture a 9-4 scoring run to take the lead, eventually gaining a two set advantage over the Pioneers with a 25-20 victory in set two.
The third and fourth sets featured back and forth momentum swings and scoring rallies, as the Pioneers defeated the Crusaders, 25-23 and 25-21, respectively, to force a fifth and decisive set.
In the final set, Capital jumped out to a 10-6 lead over Marietta, forcing a timeout by the Pioneers. Capital then tallied ended the match with five points, winning 15-11 over Marietta in set five.
Leading the way for Capital was sophomore Courtney McCracken (Newark, Ohio), who led the match with 19 kills on 48 total attacks, recording only three errors in the process. She also added 31 digs and a pair of block assists.
Senior LeAnna Cotton (Okeechobee, Fla.) followed with 12 kills of her own, while sophomore Kristen Bender (Fremont, Ohio) checked in with 11 kills.
Fellow sophomore Hanna Ewart (Wichita, Kan.) totaled 10 digs on the night.
With the win, Capital is now set to host John Carroll this coming Saturday, as the Crusaders will recognize seniors LeAnna Cotton and Kelly Leonard as part of senior day at the Capital Center. First service is scheduled for 1 p.m.
