Volleyball Falls at Ohio Northern

ADA, Ohio - The Capital University volleyball team fell, 3-0, at Ohio Northern in an Ohio Athletic Conference matchup.

Capital (9-17 overall, 1-4 OAC) fell behind 12-6 to the Polar Bears in set one, before putting together a 14-8 run to tie the set at 20 points apiece. 

Both teams went back and forth, trading the lead to 24 points, until Ohio Northern took the initial set by a slim margin of 26-24.

The Crusaders again battled the Polar Bears early on in the second set, pulling to within one point at 10-9, before Ohio Northern manufactured an 8-0 scoring run to take an 18-9 lead. Ohio Northern then went on to win set two, 25-15.

In set three, Capital jumped out to an early 7-3 advantage, only to allow the Polar Bears to rally and tie the game at 12 points apiece.

Ohio Northern then finished the set on a 13-8 scoring run, downing the Crusaders in three straight sets. 

Sophomore Hanna Ewart (Wichita, Kan.) led the Crusaders with eight kills on 28 total attacks.

Classmate Mona Ratliff (South Charleston, Ohio) followed with five kills of her own on 23 total attacks, while also registering one service ace.

Senior LeAnna Cotton (Okeechobee, Fla.), as well as sophomores Kristin Bender (Fremont, Ohio) and Courtney McCracken (Newark, Ohio) each checked in with four kills apiece.

Junior Katie Weilbacher (Grove City, Ohio) led the team with 25 assists, while senior Kelly Leonard (Cincinnati, Ohio) led the match with 20 digs.

With the loss, Capital is now set to open up its final homestand of the 2014 season, as they host Marietta on Oct. 21. First service is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Capital Center.
