GRANVILLE, Ohio – Hanna Ewart registered double-digit kills for the third time this season, however the Capital University volleyball team fell short to Denison University, Wednesday night. The Big Red downed the Crusaders in four sets, 25-22, 26-24, 18-25, 25-17.
Ewart, a Wichita, Kan. native, led the Crusaders with 12 kills on the night while hitting .273 on 33 attempts. She also posted two solo blocks and two block assists to contribute on the defensive end.
Capital (1-4) kept pace with Denison in the first set but a late surge gave the Big Red the first set by a 25-22 count. The second set looked to be going Capital's way after the Crusaders were just two points away from tying up the match, but Denison rallied to come from behind for the win.
With a two-set lead, Capital attempted a comeback and took a step in the right direction by claiming the third set, 25-18. However, the rally was cut short when the Big Red flipped the script in the fourth to clinch the match.
Denison (2-3) was paced by Leah Reinfranck (12 kills) and Brittany Perry (10 kills). As a team, the Big Red accumulated 11 service aces, led by Emily Marguerite's five. Marguerite also collected 28 digs.
Katie Weilbacher (Grove City, Ohio/Bishop Ready) tossed out 23 assists while coupling that with two service aces, and one block assist.
The Crusaders will hit the road this weekend for the Marcia French Memorial Invitational, co-hosted by Baldwin Wallace University and Case Western Reserve University. On Friday, Sept. 5, they will play Westminster College (Pa.) and The College of Wooster, beginning at 6 p.m. Saturday, they will play Grove City College and Case Western with first service at 12 p.m.
