COLUMBUS, Ohio – Capital University`s women's track and field team faced off with teams near and far as they wrapped up the last meet before Ohio Athletic Conference Championship. Capital hosted the Rick Meindl Meet in The Capital Center, Saturday afternoon. The Crusaders finished 12th in a field of 19 competitors.
The sophomore pair of Amber Thomas (Cleveland, Ohio) and Chelsea Carpenter (Cincinnati, Ohio) took two top placements in the shot put finals. Thomas had a personal best throw of 12.49 meters (40-9), good enough for fourth. Carpenter had an eighth-place finish with a throw of 11.51 meters (37-7).
Junior Gretchen Sauder (Mansfield, Ohio) was on top of her game as she walked away with a fifth-place finish in the 5,000-meter run crossing the line at 19:41.66.
Junior Shalynn Dornbush (Hopedale, Ohio) picked up some much-needed points for the Crusaders in the 400-meter dash finishing in seventh place with a time of 1:04.27. Dornbush also had a great finish in the 200 meters, setting a new personal best time of 28.40.
Freshman Larkin Joseph (New Philadelphia, Ohio) finished in the top 10 of the competition with a time of 2:31.23. Joseph placed eighth out of a field of 42 in the 800-meter run.
In the 200-meter dash, junior Taylor Atkins (Bethel, Ohio) placed 18th in what was the largest women's event of the night with a field of 68, with a time of 27.91 .
Junior Alexandra Corrigan (Burton, Ohio) ran her way into the top half of the competition in the 1-mile run with a time of 5:44.95.
Mount Union University (114) dominated the competition, taking first place. Otterbein University (67) took second place and the Ohio State Running Club (56) rounded out the top three teams.
Next week the Crusaders compete in a big meet at the Ohio Athletic Conference Indoor Championships that will be held at Dyson Baudo Recreation Center (Marietta, Ohio) on Friday, Feb. 26.
