Women`s Track and Field Takes Fifth at Otterbein Invitational

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University women's track and field competed in the Otterbein Invitational, Saturday afternoon. The Crusaders finished fifth in an 11-team field.

For the second week in a row women`s field events made a big impact. Junior Taylor Atkins (Bethel, Ohio) scored in two events, starting with a third-place finish in the long jump at 5.06m (16-7 1/5). She later took fifth in the women's high jump with a mark of 1.50m (4-11).

In the shot put, the women managed to walk away with the third, fourth and fifth place finish. Junior Ashley Freshkorn (Columbus, Ohio / Hamilton Township) not only took third place in the shot put with a mark of 11.83m (38ft), but managed to take the second place spot in weight throw with a toss of 13.83m (45-5 3/4).  Taking fourth and fifth, respectively, were a pair of sophomores Amber Thomas (Cleveland, Ohio) with a mark of 11.12m (36-5 5/6) and Chelsea Carpenter (Cincinnati, Ohio) 11.05m (36-3).

Freshman Larkin Joseph (New Philadelphia, Ohio) placed in her first appearance in the 800- meter run with a time of 2:34.19. Her fifth-place showing added some much-needed points to the team score. 

Junior Jordan Lyle (Sunbury, Ohio) a steady contender for the Crusaders pulled out a fifth place finish in pole vault with a mark of 3.10m (10-2).

The host of the meet Otterbein University blew out the competition by accumulating 208.5 points and a first-place team finish, while Ohio Dominican University with 87 points took second place, and Bethany College (W.V.) with 72 points rounded out the top of the competition.

 The next time you can catch your Crusaders will be at OAC South meet hosted at the Capital Center (Columbus, Ohio) on Saturday, Jan. 23.
