Strong Field Finishes Lead Crusaders to First Place Finish

COLUMBUS, Ohio – In their second home meet of the young season, the Capital University women's track & field team took top honors in Friday's Capital Challenge held inside the Capital Center.


The Crusaders started the meet on the right foot using high placements up and down its field event lineup. In the throw events, sophomore Ashley Freshkorn (Columbus, Ohio/Hamilton Township) and senior Jennifer Long (Hilliard, Ohio/Darby) earned a combined 28 points between the two.

Freshkorn won both of the events she participated in, which included the weight throw (14.17m) and shot put (11.07m).

Long complimented with a second-place finish in the weight throw, hitting 12.96 meters.

Also adding a runner-up finish was freshman Amber Thomas (Cleveland, Ohio), who tossed a personal best of 10.77 meters in the shot put.

Sophomore Taylor Atkins (Bethel, Ohio) was victorious in multiple events, as well. She took top honors in the long jump (5.05m) and the triple jump (9.68m) to pull down 20 points for the Crusaders. In addition, Atkins placed second in the high jump with a leap of 1.48 meters and eight more points.

In the 60-meter hurdles, all three runners represented Capital which led to a clean sweep of points, led by freshman Hannah Ayers (Newark, Ohio/Newark). Her time of 10.54 earned her first place in the event.

Adding second-place finishes in other events were Ashly Clark in the triple jump (9.19m), Jordan Lyle in the pole vault (3.05m) and Abbey Bodeker in the 60 hurdles (10.81).

With their strong start, Capital ran away with the meet scoring 180 points and more than doubling the next nearest team. Bluffton College notched 71 points, edging out third-place Spaulding University (69) and Central State University (64). Rounding out the field was Taylor University with 29 points.

Capital's next action will be at the Otterbein Invite to be held at the Rike Center (Westerville, Ohio) on Saturday, Jan. 17.
