FAIRBORN, Ohio – Capital University Women's Soccer fought hard but was not able to overcome a hot start and strong second half from Division I opponent Wright State University in a 5-0 loss on Sunday.
The Raiders started the match on fire with six shots in the first 11 minutes. The breakthrough came for the Raiders in the 12th minute when they took a 1-0 lead. After a shot was blocked out of bounds, Sarah Colvin stepped up to take a corner, sent the ball into the box and into the goal off the head of Andrea Gomez. It was the only score of the first half but Wright State went into the break with a 10-2 advantage in shots.
The Raiders doubled their lead in the 54th minute on another header off a corner kick, this one from Aaliyah Patten. Fewer than two minutes after that, Colvin scored a goal of her own with an assist from Patten to put Wright State up 3-0.
The fourth Raider goal was scored by Livi Raflik in the 72nd minute and the fifth followed just three minutes later, scored by Destiny Johnson.
Capital's first shot of the game came in the 14th minute off the foot of Jordan Fike (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) but Raider goalkeeper Maddie Jewell made the save. Eryn Bernard (Cleveland Heights, Ohio/Cleveland Heights) took Capital's second shot in the 40th minute but it was blocked.
For the game, Wright State outshot the Crusaders 18-2 and had a 12-1 advantage on corners.
Capital returns to action on Wednesday, Sept. 20 on the road against Wittenberg University at 7 p.m.
