COLUMBUS, Ohio – Capital University's women's soccer team took on the Waynesburg University Yellow Jackets at Bernlohr Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The Purple and White got its first of many goals that was set up by a high, arching corner kick by Claire Quinn (Coto de Caza, Calif.). Becca Cartmill (Temecula, Calif.) was waiting in the box when she outjumped the Yellow Jacket defender to head the ball past the goalkeeper for the game's first goal. The score was the only goal of the first half.
Capital's offense came alive in the second half, beginning in the 49th minute when Jordan Fike (Powell, Ohio) scored the first goal of her career after speeding past Waynesburg's defense and faking out the keeper, tapping the ball into an open net. One minute later, Quinn set up another goal by way of a corner kick as Monique Hanayik (Sidney, Ohio) scored in similar fashion, finding the back of the net with a header.
Fike set up fellow freshman Eryn Bernard (Cleveland Heights, Ohio), kicking the ball to her teammate between two defenders. Waynesburg's goalie wrongly anticipated the direction of the kick allowing Bernard to easily chip the ball in for Capital's fourth goal. Capital's final goal was scored after the Yellow Jacket goalie left the goal exposed after she came up to make a play on the ball. Junior midfielder Amanda Kachaylo (Moon Township, Pa.) got to the ball first, taking advantage of the open goal.
Cartmill tied her career high with nine shots, a total she has reached on two other occasions.
Sophomore goalkeeper Hannah Klotzsche (Avon, Ind.) held Waynesburg at bay with four saves.
The Crusaders dominated the shot category with a 25-6 advantage. Capital also held an advantage in corner kicks, 6-1.
Capital resumes action on Wednesday, Sept. 21 against Kenyon College. The match is slated for a 7 p.m. start time.
