Fortino Drives Capital to Victory in Double-Overtime Thriller

ADA, Ohio – The Capital University women's soccer team won a double-overtime thriller against Ohio Northern University, 2-1, on Saturday afternoon.

Capital scored the first goal of the match in the 66th minute of the match. Junior Claire Quinn (Coto de Caza, Calif.) beat the keeper driving in from the 18-yard box, making the lead 1-0.

The Polar Bears responded to the Capital score in the 78th minute with a goal from Shelby Stephens, making the score 1-1.

Despite an active 11-minute stretch to end regulation that included five total shots between both teams, the Crusaders and Polar Bears took the match all the way to a second overtime session.

It took just one shot in the second overtime for Capital to score the golden goal. The game-winner came by virtue of a penalty kick, taken by Maura Fortino (Philadelphia, Pa.). Ohio Northern was whistled for a foul inside the 100th minute to set up the senior for the one-on-one chance with ONU keeper Emily Brodict.

The Crusader defense proved to be strong throughout the match only allowing six shots on goal. Senior Kim Leitch (Rocky River, Ohio) recorded her sixth win of the season.

Capital will be in action again against Marietta College at Bernlohr Stadium on Wednesday Oct. 21 at 7 p.m.
