Brown Blasts Game Winner in 89th Minute to Down Cardinals

COLUMBUS, Ohio – With the final minutes waning in the second half, the Capital University women's soccer team came from behind to defeat rival Otterbein University, 3-2, at Bernlohr Stadium. Chloe Brown hit the game-winning goal in the 89th minute, leading Capital to its third win in a row.

With the score tied 2-2 heading into the last three minutes of the match, Capital continued to carry the momentum it had built over the course of the second half. Driving down the far side of the field, the Crusaders sent the ball into the middle of the box where it was batted around. Sophomore Chloe Brown (Monclova, Ohio) was in the middle of the traffic jam that piled in front of the Otterbein net, turned and got just enough of the ball to send it over the goal line. The goal gave Capital the lead with 1:56 left on the clock.

Capital then ran out the clock and did not allow Otterbein (6-5-0, 2-1-0 OAC) to get a quality scoring chance together.

Brown has now scored goals in back to back games and a total of six points in that span.

Junior Gennifer Vandeventer kept the Crusaders alive when shortly after coming off of the bench, she tied up the game with one shot. With 10:51 remaining in the second half, Vandeventer dribbled down the far side of the field and from eight yards off the box launched a rocket that beat Strimbu in net. For Vandeventer, it was her third goal in the last two games after she scored twice against Muskingum earlier in the week.

Despite the dramatics having been saved for the latter part of the evening, action began early at Bernlohr Stadium with each team scoring nearly one minute apart from another. Junior Becca Cartmill (Temecula, Calif.) and the Crusaders created havoc deep inside Otterbein territory, causing a turnover and converting directly into a goal. For Cartmill, it was her sixth goal of the season after burying it into the near-side corner.

Otterbein quickly responded when Megan McCabe scored her third goal of the season, again off a turnover, this time by Capital. McCabe dribbled the ball deep into the box and beat Capital keeper Kim Leitch (Rocky River, Ohio).

Just after the turn of the 22nd minute, Jillian Strimbu took the ball to the left side of the box, and took a shot to the right post. The connection put Otterbein up 2-1 midway through the first half. Neither team threatened to score the rest of the half, though Cardinals keeper Dana Strimbu prevented a near own-goal chance when a shot attempt was deflected toward the cage late in the half.

Capital is now 7-4-0 overall on the season and remains unbeaten in OAC play through three matches. They will attempt to continue that streak at Wilmington College on Tuesday, Oct. 13.
