Capital Downs Mount Union in Conference Opener

ALLIANCE, Ohio – It was cold and rainy on Saturday afternoon but that didn't stop the Capital University Crusaders from getting off to a hot start against the University of Mount Union Raiders.

In the 12th minute Claire Quinn (Coto de Caza, Calif.) scored her first goal of the season, as she was set up by teammate Chloe Brown (Monclova, Ohio). Ten minutes later, Becca Cartmill (Temecula, Calif.) chipped in a shot to pad the lead.

Mount Union received a spark from sophomore midfielder Amy Bobonik, finally putting the Raiders on the board in the 31st minute.

The Crusaders were able to preserve the lead until late in the second half when Mount Union's Kelsey Malenic erased the deficit with her eighth goal of the season.

The Raiders didn't have long to celebrate as senior midfielder Allison Mervau (Micanopy, Fla.) delivered the game-sealing goal two minutes later.

Capital was able to get off 25 shots, while holding the Raiders to 11. They also held advantages in shots on goal (16-6) and corner kicks (7-5).

Kim Leitch (Rocky River, Ohio) and Alexis Brand (Orlando, Fla.) split time at goalkeeper, combining for four saves. Leitch recorded the win, bringing her record to 5-4 on the season.

Alexis Crawford put forth a valiant effort at goalkeeper for Mount Union, making 12 saves.

Capital continues the conference schedule at home on Wednesday, October 7 against Muskingum University at 7:00 p.m.
