Women’s Soccer to Host Red Card Cancer Game

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University women's soccer team will host the Red Card Cancer Game on Saturday, Oct. 4, as they face Ohio Athletic Conference opponent the University of Mount Union at 4 p.m. at Bernlohr Stadium.

The Red Card Cancer organization was initiated in the fall of 2009 on the campus of Bloomsburg University in Pennsylvania. Paul Payne, head coach of the men's soccer team at Bloomsburg, started the program as a tribute to longtime friend and mentor, Joe Bochicchio, then-head coach of the women's soccer team at Scranton University.

When Bochicchio passed away after losing his battle with melanoma, Payne began the campaign to raise awareness about cancer in the soccer community and raise funds for research. That same year, a total of 17 programs reached out to become a part of the effort.

Since 2009, Oct. 3 has been designated as Red Card Cancer day across the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference. On its first day, Red Card Cancer raised over $5,000.

Red Card Cancer has since gained national attention with LiveSTRONG, The U.S. Soccer Federation, and other major organizations across the country.

In 2010, the program spread out of state, as Red Card Cancer partnered with The Sidney Kimmel Cancer Research Center at Johns Hopkins Medicine and D.C. United of Major League Soccer.

The Crusaders have decided to also join the effort to help support Red Card Cancer, as they will partner with Mount Union in an effort to raise awareness and funds for the organization. The event will add to the competition on the field, giving both teams and fan bases the chance to achieve another win off of the pitch.

Two separate booths will be set up prior to the game, giving fans an opportunity to support Capital and Mount Union in their efforts to raise the most money for their respective school. T-shirts will be sold and donations will be accepted for wristbands to benefit the Red Card Cancer movement. Whichever team collects the most funds in donations will earn the rights to the inaugural Red Card Cancer trophy.
