Women’s Soccer Falls in Non-Conference Finale

Box Score

For the second consecutive match, the Capital University women's soccer team played well enough for 90 minutes to garner a positive result, but a small lapse led to a 2-1 defeat at Hanover in the team's non-conference finale at Hanover, Ind.

The Crusaders (5-5 overall) surrendered two goals in a two-and-a-half-minute span, their second straight contest allowing such a run. It was the team's fourth one-goal loss of the year.Maura Fortino action shot

"Obviously we were a little disappointed with the result today," Capital coach Chris Kouns said. "Yet again we played well enough to deserve a tie, if not a win, but we can't lose that kind of focus and come out with wins against quality teams. That's something we have to sort out before Saturday."

Freshman Maura Fortino (Philadelphia, Pa.; at right) tallied the first goal of her career in the 12th minute off a cross from junior Holly Phillips (Bellbrook, Ohio) to put Capital ahead 1-0 in the early going.

"Maura Fortino was an absolute warrior today," Kouns said.

Just 10 minutes later, the Panthers (7-2) struck twice in a short span to take the lead for good.

The Crusaders were outshot by a narrow 10-9 margin but finished with nine corner kicks, compared to three for Hanover. The two teams combined to commit just 10 fouls.

Junior goalkeeper Maggie Donnellan (Cincinnati, Ohio) totaled five saves for Capital. Fortino recorded three shots, including two on goal, while senior Natalie Fiorelli (Pickerington, Ohio), junior Lauren Roy (Toledo, Ohio) and freshman Mariah Richards (Canton, Ohio) each registered a shot on goal.

"There lots of individuals who put in great efforts, but we need the entire team to put in that kind of effort all the time," Kouns said. "I think that's something that's still a challenge for us, our focus, to get all 11 (on the field) to do it at the same time."

The Crusaders open Ohio Athletic Conference play this Saturday at John Carroll. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. in University Heights, Ohio.
