COLUMBUS, Ohio – The first 21 minutes of Saturday's women's lacrosse match against Rhodes College (Tenn.) looked incredibly promising for the Crusaders, but when Capital's run came to an end the Lynx took over and ran away with an eight-goal win. Despite an early five-goal lead, Rhodes came back and defeated Capital 18-10 at Bernlohr Stadium.
Junior Kathryn Walton (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington Central) gave Cap a great start with two goals inside the first three minutes of the game. Play slowed on both sides over the next 16 minutes before the Purple and White marked up the score sheet again. Makenna Ozenghar (Youngstown, Ohio/Cardinal Mooney) tallied her first of two goals with Walton on the helper to go up 3-0.
Rhodes freshman Baylee Barker broke up the scoring spurt with a free position goal with 10:39 remaining, and it was far from the last time her name was called that afternoon.
Cap rattled off another three-goal run behind scores from sophomore Dana Stover, Ozenghar and sophomore Brooke Delara to make the score 6-1. Cap had a firm lead heading into the final nine minutes of the first half but Barker and the rest of the Lynx had other ideas.
Walton scored once more to complete the hat trick, but Barker scored four more times before the close of the half, accounting for all five of Rhodes' scores before the break.
Aidan Pike scored the first two goals of the second to tie the game, 7-7, both coming off of passes from Barker. The Crusaders came right back with two goals of their own when Brianna Rampi used a smooth move on the inside to beat the Lynx goaltender followed by Walton's fourth goal of the day. Rhodes then broke off a run of five straight goals to take a 12-9 lead.
Delara brought the game to within two goals with her eighth of the season prior to entering the final 15 minutes. Pike then scored her fifth goal of the half to kick off another run of Lynx goals to end the game. This run went uninterrupted and added six more to the Lynx's side of the scoreboard to feed into a final score of 18-10.
Barker finished with 10 points behind seven goals and three assists while also winning a game-high eight draw controls. Pike finished with five goals while Annika Hedlund also ended the day with a hat trick.
Capital (2-3) was led by Walton's four goals and one assist. She also collected four ground balls and five draw controls while causing three turnovers. Both Lisa Lotz and her goalie counterpart Lauren Lazure made 12 saves in the game.
Cap's next action will be at home on Wednesday night when they welcome the Wittenberg University Tigers to town for a 7 p.m. start from Bernlohr Stadium.
