COLUMBUS, Ohio – Marlee McCloud posted a career-high four goals as the Capital University women's lacrosse team hosted Ohio Northern University in the final Ohio Athletic Conference game of the season. Cap sent its seniors off with a 17-2 win.
Senior Marlee McCloud (Milford, Ohio / Milford) scored back-to-back goals less than a minute into the game. The first goal was assisted by senior Korri Titus (Pickerington, Ohio / Pickerington North) and the second by junior Regan Hanood (Pickerington, Ohio / Pickerington North).
Junior Kara Hines (Columbus, Ohio / Worthington Kilbourne) notched Cap's third goal as she took a pass from Hanood and beat the ONU net minder. Sophomore Makenna Ozenghar (Youngstown, Ohio / Cardinal Mooney) picked up an unassisted goal to put the Crusaders up 4-0, just five minutes into the first half.
Junior Victoria Husain (Westerville, Ohio / Westerville South) earned an assist as she found an open Titus for the fifth unanswered goal by Capital.
Hanood added two more assists, one on a McCloud goal and another on Hines goal. Senior Shannon Walton (Fairview Park, Ohio / Magnificat) tallied an unassisted goal with 17 minutes left until halftime.
Hanood earned her fifth point of the game, when she scored an unassisted goal. Junior Mary Manos (Canton, Ohio / Jackson) beat the Ohio Northern goalie for an unassisted goal. Hanood added another goal and was assisted by sophomore Taylor Barclcay (Granville, Ohio / Granville).
The Polar Bears finally got on the board with 2:45 left in the first half. Katie McCourt scored on a free position shot after being fouled in the shooting area.
Titus scored the final goal of the first half on a shot that came off of a free position shot.
Husain started the scoring in the second half as she found the back of the net off of a pass from Hanood. Ozenghar notched her second goal when she beat the ONU keeper.
Jacqui Lohman scored Ohio Northern's only goal of the second half on a free position shot.
Titus converted on a free position shot and then connected with McCloud to put Cap up 16-2. Senior Alexis Juergensen (Canton, Ohio / Jackson) scored the game's final goal, when beat the Polar Bear goaltender.
Shannen Larsen Van Alstine picked up the loss in net for ONU. Van Alstine made 10 saves on 27 shots. The Polar Bears made 11-of-22 clear attempts and went 2-for-5 on free position shots.
Senior Maddie Wilson (Chagrin Falls, Ohio / Chagrin Falls) earned her ninth win of the season and improved to 9-3 on the season. Wilson made three saves on five shots.
Capital forced ONU to 31 turnovers, while Cap committed 17. The Crusaders had the upper hand in draw controls, 12-9. Capital outshot ONU 31-6, and collected more ground balls, 27-14. Cap was successful on 14-of-15 clear attempts and converted 2-of-3 free position shots.
McCloud finished with a game-high four goals. Hanood finished with a seven point day, with five assists and two goals. Titus accumulated five points, on three goals and two assists. Ozenghar and Hines each finished with two goals.
The Capital defense was led by Manos with four caused turnovers. Titus and Wilson added three caused turnovers. The Cap defense held the Polar Bears to just six shots for the game's entirety.
Today's game marks the final home game for Capital's first graduating class. This group of five seniors have recorded a record of 43-17 overall and a 16-9 record in OAC play. This group of young women has accumulated six first team, four second team and one honorable mention selection. They have combined for six academic All-OAC accolades and in back-to-back years contributed toward being named IWLCA Academic Honor Squad.
The Crusaders closed out the regular season with an overall record of 11-3 and an OAC record of 6-2. With the victory, Capital clinched the No. 3 seed in the OAC Tournament and will travel to the No. 2 seed Baldwin Wallace University on Wednesday. The start time of the game will be determined later.
