Crusaders Handle Pioneers in Season Opener

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Capital University women's lacrosse team was in action Saturday at Transylvania University. The Crusaders won 15-5 in the season opener, led by Victoria Husain's five goals.

The Crusaders fell behind early after the Pioneers scored just 30 seconds into the game. Capital would respond with the next two goals. Sophomore Kara Hines (Columbus, Ohio/ Worthington Kilbourne), scored off of a free position shot at the 27-minute mark in the first half to tie the game, 1-1. Senior Kim Hoerauf (Worthington, Ohio/ Thomas Worthington) tied the game 2-2 after she scored on a pass from Kara Hines.

Capital would go on a 5-0 run after goals from Hines, Korri Titus, Hoerauf, and two from Husain. The Pioneers cut the Crusader lead with two unanswered goals, trimming the Capital lead to 7-4.

At the six-minute mark, Husain struck again when she scored a free position shot giving the Crusaders a 8-4 lead going into the half. 

Capital came out strong in the second half scoring the first six goals. The goals came from Titus, Hoerauf (2), Husain (2) and Hines. The stingy Crusader defense didn't surrender a goal until less than two minutes left in the game. Hines scored 11 seconds after the Transylvania goal making the lead 15-5.

Husain finished the game with five points, four goals and one assist, while recording a game-high five ground balls. Hoerauf finished with four goals on the afternoon.

Junior goalie Maddie Wilson (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) was strong in net only surrendering four goals on the afternoon. She made eight saves on 12 shots on goal against while in net for 53:36.

The Capital defense was stout all afternoon, forcing 16 turnovers while surrendering only 19 shots in the game.  The Crusaders held advantages in ground balls (15-11), shots (30-19) and cleared their zone 19 out of 24 chances.

The Pioneers were led by Julia Ward with three goals. She also had a game-high seven draw controls.

The Crusaders, now 1-0 on the season, return to action Tuesday, March 1 as they take on Johnson and Wales (R.I.) in Clermont, Fla. during their two-game stint over Capital's mid-semester break.
