Women's Lacrosse Dominates Second Half, Records First Varsity Road Win

WAYNESBURG, Pa. - The Capital University women's lacrosse team began a fresh winning streak on Friday evening with a 12-6 victory over Waynesburg, tallying the first-ever varsity road win in program history.

Freshman Korri Titus (Pickerington, Ohio) led the Crusaders with five goals on a total of 12 shots, with an astounding number of seven of them coming on goal. Classmate Shannon Walton (Fairview Park, Ohio) followed with an impressive night of her own, recording three goals on eight shots with six of them coming on goal.

Capital got the scoring going just over three minutes into the contest, as Titus found the back of the net for the intiial goal of the game on an assist from fellow freshman Marlee McCloud

Waynesburg then responded with a goal of their own some 11 minutes later, before Titus and Walton posted back-to-back unassisted scores, giving the Crusaders a 3-1 lead with 8:07 left in the opening half.

However, the Yellow Jackets again retaliated, scoring three unanswered goals over the course of five and a half minutes, taking their first lead of the game at 4-3 with 1:18 remaining in the first half. Titus then helped the Crusaders regain their lead eight seconds later, as Capital scored the final goal before the halftime break was tied at four goals apiece.

In the opening half, both teams shot nearly identical as the Crusaders held a slight 15-13 advantage over the Yellow Jackets in total shots taken.

The Yellow Jackets opened the second half of play with a quick score just under a minute and a half into the final period, before Titus tallied back-to-back goals of her own, the first coming off a free position shot, helping the Crusaders regain their lead at 6-5. 

But again Waynesburg held strong, scoring yet another game tying goal just under one minute later, proving to be the last score of the game for the Yellow Jackets at the 20:24 mark.

The Crusaders then went on a scoring spree, recording six unanswered goals over the final 18:40 of the contest, leading to a dominating second half. In the scoring run, Walton tallied a pair of goals, the second assisted by junior Carly Pries (Hilliard, Ohio), while classmate Marlee McCloud (Milford, Ohio) posted two scores of her own, both assisted by Walton.

Sophomore Kim Hoerauf (Worthington, Ohio) and freshman Emma Schaefer (Hilliard, Ohio) each tallied an unassisted goal apiece as well over that span.

Following a first half tie at four goals apiece, Capital outscored Waynesburg 8-2 in the second half. 

Freshman goalie Maddie Wilson (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) saved 10 shots on 16 faced on goal, notching her fifth win of the season.

On the game, the Crusaders began the contest turning the ball over 19 times in the opening half, while drastically improving on ball control in the second half with a turnover mark of just nine. Waynesburg was forced into 25 turnovers on the night.

With the win, Capital (5-1 overall) travels to Franciscan on Saturday for the two teams' second meeting of the season this time a 12:30 p.m. start in Steubenville, Ohio.
