Women's Lacrosse Suffers First Loss

GREENVILLE, Pennsylvania – The Capital University women's lacrosse team suffered its first loss of the season in a 10-8 defeat to Thiel (Pa.) on Saturday afternoon.

Capital opened the game with a 2-0 lead following back-to-back goals off free positions shots by freshman Emma Shafer (Hilliard, Ohio).

The Tomcats then responded with back-to-back goals of their own to tie the game at two goals apiece with 18:25 remaining in the opening half of play.

Freshman Miranda Stellini (Dublin, Ohio) then helped the Crusaders gain back the lead at 3-2, as she found the back of the net on a free position shot at the 17:23 mark.

Thiel then tallied five unanswered goals to end the first half, taking a 7-3 lead into the halftime break.

As the second half of play unfolded, the Crusaders tallied a quick goal at the 26:09 mark, as freshman Shannon Walton (Fairview Park, Ohio) recorded an unassisted goal.

Shafer then posted her second score of the game on an unassisted goal at the 24:22 mark of the second half, before Walton found the back of the net for the second time on the afternoon, cutting Capital's deficit to 7-6 with 15:31 remaining in the second half.

The Tomcats again responded with back-to-back goals, increasing their lead to 9-6, before sophomore Kim Hoerauf (Worthington, Ohio) managed to trim the deficit to 9-7 on an unassisted man-up goal.

Both teams scored one goal apiece in the final 4:23 of the game, as Hoerauf tallied her second and the Crusaders final goal late in the contest.

In total, the Crusaders outshot the Tomcats 24-22, while forcing their opposition into 18 turnovers on the afternoon.

With the loss, Capital (4-1 overall) continues its three game road trip, traveling to Waynesburg (Pa.) this coming Friday for a 6 p.m. start time in Waynesburg, Pa.
