GALENA, Ohio – Capital University and Otterbein University teamed up to create the inaugural Columbus Cup, match play style tournament held at two locations over a two-day span. The Crusaders finished second out of the four-team field.

The tournament began on Friday at NorthStar Golf Club in Sunbury, Ohio where Capital met up with Otterbein, Ohio Northern University, and Marietta College. Ohio Northern edged out Otterbein on the opening day, 4-3, and met Cap in the championship round on Sunday.

Capital first took care of business against Marietta with a close match of its own. Capital number one Sydney Kelly got Cap on the board by defeating Hannah Garafalo, 4-and-3 (won by four holes with three holes to play). Junior Molly Frey took it down to the wire with Alyssa Shawger with a 1-up (won with a victory on the final hole) to account for a second Capital point. Shelby Byland and Beth Labar tied it up with wins over Reagan Johnson (4-and-3) and Megan Maschari (1-up), but Alyssa Greening and Kari Hogan helped bring it home with wins over Morgan Scott (6-and-5) and Michaela Medich (5-and-4). The final score of Cap's first match of the tournament was a 4-3 victory over Marietta.

Capital then met up with Ohio Northern on Sunday at Royal American Golf Club in Galena, Ohio for the championship bout. The Polar Bears took the match and the inaugural Columbus Cup title by a score of 5-2. Kelly and Maschari account for both of Cap's points. Kelly defeated Lydia Cranmer, 2-and-1 in a nip-tuck matchup. Maschari picked up a big 6-and-5 victory of Meghan Utterdyke to put up another point. Molly Frey was edged out by Anika Neumann on the 17th hole in a 2-and-1 decision.

In the consolation match, Otterbein shutout Marietta with a clean sweep among its seven-person lineup.

Capital will pack its bags for West Lafayette, Ohio for the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) Preview on Sept. 28-29. The two-day tournament will be played at River Greens Golf Club.
