COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University women's golf team opened play for the fall season at the Yellow Jacket Invitational, hosted by Baldwin Wallace University at Mallard Creek Golf Club. The Purple and White placed third out in the three-team field and had two finish inside the top five on the leaderboard.
A couple of Capital veterans put together an impressive weekend with complementary efforts out of its younger team members. Senior Sydney Kelly (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) and junior Molly Frey (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington North) served as Cap's top two finishers and both finished fifth or better in the 21-person field.
Kelly came in strong by carding an 80 in the opening round, good to put her in third place after the end of Friday's action. The Capital record holder was unable to keep that pace on Sunday's second round after shooting 91. Despite the drop, Kelly held her ground and finished in a tie for fifth place with a two-day total of 171 (+27).
Teammate Molly Frey had two consistent rounds and was rewarded with a fourth-place finish at tournament's end. On Saturday, Frey put forth an 82 - good for fifth place - and then followed that up with an 84 during her second pass through the course.
- Senior Alyssa Greening played her first official round since 2017 and finished 13th overall behind a 99-98-197 (+53).
- Reagan Johnson made her collegiate debut this weekend and placed 16th overall. She showed the greatest improvement between rounds, lowering her score by 19 strokes (115-96-221, +67).
- Sophomore Megan Machari dropped from 12th to 15th place after rounds of 98 and 106.
- Senior Kari Hogan also competed and placed 18th overall (102-113-215, +71).
There will be no rest for the Crusaders as they turn around and head slightly south to compete in the Roseann Schwartz Invitational, hosted by Youngstown State University at Mill Creek North Golf Course. The Crusaders will kick off the two-day, 36-hole tournament on Monday, Sept. 1.
