BEVERLY, Ohio – Sydney Kelly went into the weekend looking for a solid showing to help aid in the absence of Madison Harsh. She not only achieved that but also came out of the Pioneer Classic with a share of third place overall while Cap finished in third place out of eight total teams.
Sydney Kelly (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) served as Capital's low scorer during both rounds of the Pioneer Classic held at Lakeside Golf Club in Beverly, Ohio. The senior finished tied for third overall on the individual leaderboard after shooting rounds of 82 and 83 to finished with a weekend score of 165 (+21).
Kelly was one of three Crusaders to finish inside the top 10 of this weekend's field of 46. Joining her inside the top 10 were senior Kaitlynn Kinley and sophomore Molly Frey. Separated by just two strokes, the duo took eighth and a share of ninth, respectively. Kinley shot rounds of 85 and 87 (172) to take eighth place while Frey showed improvement between days one and two with scores of 88 and 86 between Saturday and Sunday action. Her 174 helped her claim ninth.
Rounding out the scoring lineup was junior Kari Hogan (Louisville, Ohio/Canton Glen Oak), who was inserted into the starting lineup. Her Saturday score of 91 put Hogan in a good spot to contribute toward Cap's day one score. She followed up with a 99 on day two for a two-day total of 190 and a share of 25th place.
Freshman Megan Maschari (Sandusky, Ohio/St. Mary's Central Catholic) struggled on day one with a 108, but rebounded with a 10-stroke jump on Sunday to contribute toward Cap's day two scorecard.
Altogether, Cap posted a 700 (346-354) over the weekend. Cap shared second place with rival Otterbein after Saturday's action, but the two teams found themselves separated by 15 strokes at tournament's end.
The University of Mount St. Joseph took the team title behind a weekend score of 677 (338-339) followed by Otterbein (346-339-685). Top medalist honors went to Ohio Valley University's Joslyn Goins (79-76-155).
Capital's next action will be on April 6-7 when they compete at the Otterbein Spring Classic at NorthStar Golf Club in Delaware, Ohio.
