BLUFFTON, Ohio – Two members of the Capital University women's golf team earned top-five finishes to help the Crusaders finish third at this weekend's Beaver Fall Classic, hosted by Defiance College. The Crusaders also marked up its record book with one of the lowest team tournament scores in program history.
Sophomore Madison Harsh (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson) and senior Katelynn Kinley (Sycamore, Ohio/Mohawk) both finished inside the top five individual finishers to help pace Capital throughout the weekend. Senior Sydney Kelly (Worthington, Ohio/Worthington Kilborne) joined her teammates in the tournament's top-10 finishers, tying for eighth.
Kinley held the team lead after day one, shooting the first of her back-to-back rounds of 85 at the Bluffton Golf Club. Harsh was one shot behind her after the end of the first day but made the biggest improvement between rounds when she improved her score by four strokes. Harsh's round two, 82 not only elevated her to fourth place overall but it also put her name into the top single-round low scores in program history. Her 82 puts her in a tie for the 13th-lowest 18-hole score in CU women's golf history, a mark shared with just four others.
By modeling consistency with a second round of 85, Kinley ended in a tie for fifth place overall.
After factoring in the contributions of Kelly (88-86-174) and sophomore Molly Frey (95-94-189), Capital finished the weekend with a team score of 701. They finished the first day nine shots out of first place and in fourth place but by improving in their second round by seven strokes, they surpassed Manchester University (703) by two strokes to capture third place in the team standings.
Ohio Northern University (687) finished first overall and housed the tournament's top medalist, Lydia Cranmer (83-74-157). Franklin College (690) finished ahead of Capital by 11 shots.
Capital has two tournaments remaining in its fall season. Its next action will be at the Ohio Athletic Conference Preview, held at River Greens Golf Club in West Lafayette, Ohio. That tournament will be held Saturday, September 29 and Sunday, September 30.
