DEFIANCE, Ohio – The Capital University women's golf team hit the road for Defiance, Ohio to compete in the Defiance Invitational at Eagle Rock Golf Club on Saturday. Despite subpar weather conditions, the 10-team field was able to complete the first round but will cancel Sunday's second round. In the shortened tournament, Capital wound up in third place led by a pair of top-10 finishes.
Senior Katelynn Kinley (Sycamore, Ohio/Mohawk) showed improvement from last weekend's competition and on Saturday served as Capital's top performer. Battling through the elements, Kinley shot an 11-over par, 82 to lead the Purple and White. Kinley finished fifth overall in a field of 54 competitors.
Last week's leader, Sydney Kelly (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington), landed three strokes behind her fellow senior and finished tied for 10th place. Through 18, Kelly shot an 85, 14-over par.
As a team, Capital (348) finished third overall and held off fourth-place Manchester University by four strokes. Alma College took the team title (324) and housed the top medalist, Kennedy Hilley (77). Madonna College took second place behind a 336 team score.
The Crusaders will take next week off and use the time to prepare for the Beaver Fall Classic, hosted at Hidden Creek & Bluffton Country Club by Bluffton University. The two-day tournament will take place on September 22 and 23.
