BEVERLY, Ohio – Capital University Women's Golf took part in the annual Pioneer Classic, hosted by Marietta College, on Sunday and Monday at Lakeside Golf Club. The Crusaders played a strong and consistent 36 holes and finished second overall in a diverse field of opponents.

Capital (361-362-723) finished as the tournament's runners-up behind only Youngstown State University (NCAA Division I). The Crusaders finished day-one action just six shots behind the Penguins before YSU ran away with the title behind a score that improved by 29 strokes (355-326-681).

Senior Katie Lease (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson) led round-one action by turning in an 89, which played her inside the top-5 exiting Sunday. Teammates Madison Harsh (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson), Janie Moller (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington North) and Sydney Kelly (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) followed closely behind with scores of 90, 91 and 91, respectively.

All four left the course with top-10 finishes, and Capital would conclude with four placing inside the top-10 of the 26-person field. Kelly and Lease would remain the top finishers for Cap by tournament's end.

Kelly returned to the course and improved upon her day one totals. Her five-stroke improvement marked Capital's largest jump on the scoreboard. Kelly finished with a tournament score of 177 (91-86) to capture seventh place overall and keep Capital on pace for its runner-up team finish.

Though Lease fell back a few strokes on the second day of action the senior still closed out the tournament with a ninth-place finish (89-92-181) overall. Harsh remained inside the tournament's top 10 placers with a 184 (90-94), though junior Kaitlyn Kinley (Sycamore, Ohio/Mohawk) made a move from her perch at 12th into a top-10 placement. Kinley made a four-stroke leap in the standings after completing the final round with a 90, rounding out her score at a 184.

Janie Moller (91-95-186) ended the tournament in a share for 12th place.

Courtney Shutt of Youngstown State took top medalist honors behind a scorecard that read 80-74-154 and shot a tournament low 74 on day two.

Capital will prepare for its next action on Saturday, April 7 and Sunday, April 8 at the Hanover College Women's Spring Match. The event will be hosted at Sunrise Falls Golf Club in Madison, Indiana.
