FLETCHER, N.C. – The Capital University women's golf team took its talents to Fletcher, N.C. where Mars Hill University hosted its own invitational tournament. Comprised of a strong field of NCAA Division II and NAIA talent, Capital competed admirably and finished fifth out of six teams.
Capital shot consistently with squad scores of 367 and 366 for a two-day team total of 733, placing CU fifth. Three Capital golfers finished in the teens on the individual leaderboard.
Marian University (NAIA) came away with the team win by a wide margin with a tournament total of 339-335-674. Meghan Holbrooks won the individual title with an 81-75-156 scorecard.
Capital was led by senior Katie Lease (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson) who turned in scores of 90 and 89, good for a total of 179 and a 13th-place finish. Her teammate Sydney Kelly (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) was just one shot off that pace after turning in a 91-89-180. Kelly finished with a share of 14th place.
Junior Kaitlyn Kinley (Sycamore, Ohio/Mohawk) turned in a 185 (91-94) to claim a share of 17th place. Three Crusaders finished with matching 191 scores. Janie Moller (95-96), Madison Harsh (97-94) and Molly Frey (97-94) all staked a claim for 22nd place. Frey competed as an individual, as did Kari Hogan (104-106-210).
Capital will return to action on March 25-26 when they come back to the Buckeye State to compete at the Pioneer Classic at the Marietta Country Club (Marietta, Ohio).
