Capital University Athletics has announced the hiring of Molly Brennan as assistant women’s basketball coach. Brennan, a former assistant at the Division II level and Division III head coach begins her second season with the Crusaders and will continue overseeing and developing Cap’s post players, as well as aiding in team operations and recruitment.

In her first season with the Crusaders, Brennan helped CU make a three-game improvement from the previous year’s win-loss record and coached two all-conference selections in Erin Risner (First Team All-OAC) and Regan Stonerock (honorable mention). Off the court, the Crusaders were named to the Academic All-OAC list.

Brennan was a Division III athlete at Ithaca College where she earned her bachelor’s degree in exercise science in 2006. As a four-year member of the Bombers, her teams compiled a 78-32 overall record with three 20-plus win seasons over her career. In each of those 20-win seasons, the Bombers advanced to the NCAA Division III Tournament. Ithaca made their deepest run in 2002-03 when the team advanced to the Sweet 16.

Brennan then spent four years at SUNY Potsdam (N.Y.) where she completed her master’s degree in addition to serving as assistant coach to the women’s basketball program. With Brennan on staff, the Bears showed tremendous growth as a program. Following the 2006-07 season, Potsdam was tabbed the 12th-most improved team in the NCAA. In 2007-08, the Bears were invited to participate in the ECAC Tournament for the first time in program history. That season also marked the first All-SUNYAC selection from a Potsdam team in nine seasons, and the first of three for guard Courtney Poirier.

The 2008-2009 marked the most single-season wins (17) in program history, which fed into the team’s first chance to compete in the SUNYAC championship game.

In 2010, Brennan traded in the assistant tag and became the head coach at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford (Division III). In two seasons, her teams compiled a 26-26 overall record and made two AMCC Tournament appearances. In her first season at the helm, the Panthers won the Donna Ledwin/Officials Sportsmanship Award. In her tenure, Brennan coached four All-AMCC selections.

Brennan went on to become the assistant coach at Division II St. Edward’s University (Texas) between 2012 and 2015. She again was part of a major reconstruction effort in which the program tied the program record for largest turnaround. Following a season in which the Hilltoppers won just four games, they came back the next year to win 13 games with Brennan on staff, showing a nine-win improvement. In 2013-14, St. Edward’s finished fourth in the regular season standings then made a major run through the conference tournament. St. Edward’s went on to win the Heartland Conference Tournament Championship and advance to the NCAA Regional Tournament, both firsts in program history. In three seasons, Brennan helped coach seven all-conference selections.

In addition to her degree from Ithaca, Brennan holds a master’s degree in Information and communications from SUNY Potsdam.
