COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University women's basketball team continued its ongoing winning streak with a fifth straight victory, this time over the Muskingum University Fighting Muskies. The Crusaders took care of the Muskies in its home opener at The Capital Center Performance Arena with a 65-46 victory, sparked by multiple double-digit scoring performances.
The Crusaders (5-0, 2-0 OAC) held the Muskies (1-6, 0-2 OAC) to just 29.8 percent shooting from the field and induced 24 turnovers which led to 23 Capital points. Muskingum kept within arm's length for three quarters, but Capital outscored the Muskies 19-6 in the final stanza to pull away for good in its 19-point triumph.
Capital held a slim six-point lead heading to begin the fourth quarter but after the Muskies scored its only six points of the quarter the Crusaders went on to score the game's remaining 15 points and kept their guests scoreless over the final 7:50 of game time. Nine of the Crusaders' 19 fourth-quarter points came from freshman Emma Burns (Westerville, Ohio/St. Francis DeSales), accounting for all her scoring in the game. She hit all three of her shots in the fourth, two of those coming from beyond the arc.
Senior Erin Risner (Canfield, Ohio/Canfield) helped get Capital started on the right foot with six points and four rebounds in the opening frame. That fed into her first double-double of the season after she finished with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Risner has now scored 10 or more points in four straight games and as part of the win eclipsed 600 points in her career. She is also just six rebounds away from 400 in her Capital tenure.
Junior Cassidy Bosch (Logan, Ohio/Logan) went on to score seven of her 10 points in a second quarter that Capital shot 63.6 percent from the field as a team. Muskingum scored the last four points in the quarter, leading to a 33-26 score in Capital's favor heading into halftime.
Capital cooled off in the third quarter, hitting just 2-of-11 (.182) field goal attempts but still managed to hold the Muskies to just 14 points in the only quarter they outscored the Crusaders though just by one. That served as the precursor to an electric fourth quarter and Capital's breakaway to victory.
Bosch joined Risner in the double-figures club after finishing with 10 points to go along with a pair of steals, two rebounds, and one assist. Risner also added three steals and one block to her impressive line. Junior Regan Stonerock (Circleville, Ohio/Westfall) put together her third game with 10 or more rebounds this season after finishing with eight points and 11 boards.
Muskingum was led by Emily Yeager's 14 points on 5-of-15 shooting, four steals, one block, and three rebounds.
Capital will take its five-game winning streak into Ada, Ohio this weekend when the Crusaders face off against Ohio Northern University (6-1, 1-1 OAC) on Saturday, Dec. 8. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m.
