ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Capital University Women's Basketball opened the 2017-18 season in Rochester, N.Y. at the Chuck Resler Invitational Tournament on Friday night. The Crusaders played the nationally ranked Yellow Jackets of the University of Rochester, but fell in its season opener by a final score of 71-55 despite a strong debut from freshman Elle Folan.

Junior forward Erin Risner (Canfield, Ohio/Canfield) hit the first basket of the season and of the game, but host Rochester wasted little time in mounting a run that would give them a 12-point lead. After the Yellow Jackets scored 13 of the next 15 points, Risner broke up the run with a layup. Capital shot just 25 percent from the field, but the slow start reversed its course when Capital's Elle Folan began to heat up.

No. 21 Rochester (1-0) increased its lead to 13 in the opening minutes of the second quarter just before Folan hit the first triple for the first points of her collegiate career. It was one of four 3-pointers the Cincinnati, Ohio native hit in the quarter and the final trey put Capital back on top, 30-29. Folan also recorded a block on a 3-point shot to feed into four consecutive missed field goals for Rochester.

Lizzy Atkinson hit back-to-back threes at the end of the half to help the Yellow Jackets regain the lead heading into halftime. Atkinson and the Yellow Jackets' outside game helped Rochester regain the momentum and advantage as the third quarter progressed. Rochester went 4-for-6 from behind the arc in the third stanza to grow its lead to 11 points as the quarter came to a close.

Rochester did its job on the defensive side, tallying a total of 12 blocks on the evening. Six of those came in the fourth quarter as Capital attempted to respond to Rochester's lead. However, Capital shot just 3-for-13 from the field in the fourth, preventing the Crusaders from overcoming its late deficit.

Folan had a successful debut with a team-high 16 points. The freshman went 5-for-11 from 3-point range, accounting for all but one of her points. She also added two rebounds and one assist to her line during her first collegiate game.

Risner finished the night with 14 points on 7-of-16 shooting from the field, while also adding eight rebounds, three steals and three assists.

Rochester's 3-point game helped lead the Yellow Jackets to victory. Rochester shot 47.4 percent (9-19) from long range and 46.7 percent from field goal range. Atkinson led that charge with five of the team's nine 3-pointers on just seven tries. She led all scorers with 19 points and was one of three U of R players with 10 or more points. Alexandra Leslie posted seven blocks to accompany 13 points.

Capital (0-1) will now play Calvin College (0-1) on Saturday, Nov. 18 at 1 p.m. from the Louis Alexander Palestra.
