COLUMBUS, Ohio -- On Sunday, October 23, 2017 the Capital University women's basketball team welcomed a new member to its team for the upcoming season. Through the Team IMPACT Cystic Fibrosis (CF) Project, Head Coach Dixie Jeffers and the Crusaders selected Marysville, Ohio native Mercadize Paver to join the Cap Fam.

Capital Women's Basketball held a press conference in The Capital Center on Sunday to announce their number one draft pick, Mercadize Paver (pronounced "mer-SAY-deeze", "PAY-ver"), and welcome her entire family into the Cap Fam. Mercadize is nine years old and hails from nearby Marysville, Ohio.

By being a part of the Capital University Women's Basketball program, Mercadize will attend Crusader practices, games, team dinners, events, serve as honorary captain, and more.

"It is a complete, instant impact that Mercadize is going to have and has had on this team," said Jeffers. "It was an instant fit right away. She puts things into perspective for us on a daily basis … I couldn't be more thrilled, Mercadize, to have you part of the Cap Fam and to be our very first-ever draft pick."

Team IMPACT is a national nonprofit that connects children facing life-threatening and chronic illnesses with the support system of a college sports team. Through the Team IMPACT CF Project sponsored by Vertex Pharmaceuticals, children who have CF like Mercadize are drafted onto local college athletic teams and become an official member of the team to support the child's physical, social and emotional needs.

Since 2011, Team IMPACT has matched more than 1,200 children with more than 450 colleges and universities in 46 states, reaching over 35,000 participating student-athletes. The child joins the athletic team and the student-athletes join the child's support team – from Draft Day to Graduation. During the journey, the child gains strength, camaraderie and support while the student-athletes experience lessons of courage, resiliency and perspective they can't learn in a classroom. Mercadize's determination to persevere through adversity has already made her an inspiration to the rest of her future Crusader teammates.
