Blue Streaks Overcome Cap in Final Frame

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio – The Capital University women's basketball team went into the fourth quarter of Saturday afternoon's game with a six-point lead at the Decarlo Center, but came away with a loss by the same margin. The Blue Streaks outscored Capital 19-7 in the final frame to down the Crusaders, 64-58, despite double-digit offensive performances from Emily Ondo and Elli Wachtman.

Up by six points heading into the final 10 minutes of the game, Capital (5-8, 1-5 OAC) then grew heir lead to nine with a five-point run courtesy of freshman forward Elli Wachtman (Upper Arlington, Ohio/Upper Arlington) and sophomore forward Erin Risner (Canfield, Ohio/Canfield). However, the Blue Streaks responded immediately afterward with 17 unanswered points, and outscored Capital 17-2 over the final 6:20. Capital was held to just one field goal but committed eight turnovers over that span of time. With the aid of nine Capital personal fouls, JCU went 10-for-12 from the charity stripe and hit four of their eight field goal attempts to solidify their comeback.

Despite being outscored in the first quarter, the middle stanzas belonged to the Purple and White. They grew their largest lead to 10 points by the end of the third quarter by holding the hosts to a 33.3 percent or lower shooting percentage, and forcing nine turnovers. Cap outscored John Carroll 37-23 over the middle 20 minutes with senior Colleen Fondessy (Fostoria, Ohio/St. Wendelin) posting eight of her 10 points during that timeframe. Freshman Regan Stonerock (Westfall, Ohio/Westfall) chipped in seven of her nine points in the third, hitting all three field goal attempts plus a free throw. Stonerock finished with nine points and eight rebounds following her last game in which she posted her first career double-double.

Emily Ondo (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler Area) continued her strong play with her third double-digit point effort over her last four games. The sophomore went 7-for-17 from the field (.412) for 14 points and added four assists, three steals, and six rebounds.

Elli Wachtman tied Ondo for the team lead with 14 points but shot at a 63.6 percent (7-17) clip from the field. She led Cap with seven rebounds, four on the offensive side. She marked the third Cap starter to finish with 10 or more points in the loss.

For John Carroll, Shmoo Pryor paced her team with 19 points on 7-of-15 shooting and added a game-high seven steals. Standout Katlyn Spahar was kept in check having made just 2-of-11 from the field and seven of her 12 points coming from the free throw line. Chelbi Graham posted a double-double behind 15 points and 12 rebounds.

Capital held advantages over John Carroll in several team statistical categories including rebounds (47-37), assists (16-14), points off turnovers (26-21), points in the paint (30-28), and bench points (15-11). John Carroll held a higher field goal shooting percentage, 39.7 percent to Cap's 34.7 percent, pacing them to victory.

Capital will get back to playing at home in its next contest on Wednesday, Jan. 11 when they welcome Heidelberg University to The Capital Center. It is Aloha, Heidelberg Night so bring your beach towels, sun glasses, swim trunks and Hawaiian shirts to The Cap Center for fun and OAC basketball. Tipoff between the Student Princes and Crusaders is set for 7:30 p.m.
