COLUMBUS, Ohio – Capital University's women's basketball team took on the undefeated Yellow Jackets of Baldwin Wallace University on Saturday afternoon. The Crusaders kept the score close throughout the contest but their inaccuracy from the field plagued them late in the game.

Capital (3-5 overall, 0-4 OAC) had control of a low-scoring first quarter, putting up the game's first six points. Baldwin Wallace (7-0, 4-0) took its first lead of the game at the beginning of the second quarter with a shot from 3-point ranged from junior guard Katie Smith. However, the lead was short-lived as Capital responded with five consecutive points from Emily Ondo (Pittsburg, Pa.), who followed a mid-ranged jumper with a 3-pointer. Both offenses continued to struggle to score points in the second quarter resulting in a 17-16 halftime score in favor of Capital.

Capital built its largest lead of the game, making three-straight baskets coming out of the break. Two of those three baskets came from freshman forward Elli Wachtman (Upper Arlington, Ohio/Upper Arlington).

Capital's momentum was then stifled by a three-ball from Hannah Fecht. The 3-point shot sparked a 15-2 run by the Yellow Jackets that lasted for three minutes of the third quarter. Capital fought its way back from the run to cut Baldwin Wallace's lead to just three at the conclusion of the third quarter.

Mistakes committed by Capital allowed Baldwin Wallace to build a comfortable lead in the fourth quarter. The Yellow Jackets used a 10-2 lead, capped off by another 3-pointer from Fecht, midway through the fourth quarter to put the game out of Capital's reach for good.

As a team, the Crusaders shot just 26.2 (16-for-61) percent from the field compared to Baldwin Wallace, who shot 26.2 (18-for-49) percent. The Yellow Jackets held advantages in points in the paint (24-18), and assists (10-8). Baldwin Wallace also received plenty of help from its bench with 28 bench points. The Crusaders managed to out-rebound the Yellow Jackets 43 to 33.

Ondo led all players with a career high 16 points while Wachtman fell just one point short of a double-double with 10 rebounds and nine points.

The Purple and White have a quick turnaround as they take on Carnegie Mellon University (Pa.) on Monday, Dec. 19 at 4 p.m. at the Capital Center.
