NEW CONCORD, Ohio – Capital University's women's basketball team took part in a thrilling game against Muskingum University at the Anne Steele Center on Thursday evening. The Muskies were able to hit big shots in pivotal moments to top the Crusaders, 68-66 in overtime.

Capital (3-3 overall, 0-2 OAC) owned the first half after scoring the first seven points of the game. Colleen Fondessy (Fostoria, Ohio) made a pair of jumpers as Meredith Ovies (Franklin, Tenn.) added a three ball.

Muskingum's (3-2, 2-0) Mallory Taylor halted the run with the first of her three made 3-point shots.

Capital wasted no time putting together another run that lasted three minutes. The 11-2 run was highlighted by a 3-point shot from Ovies. A 3-pointer from Taylor once again stopped Capital's momentum.

Down by seven with six seconds left in the quarter, the Fighting Muskies swung the momentum in their favor as junior guard Caitlyn Smith hit a 3-point shot as time expired, bringing the first quarter score to 22-18 in favor of the Purple and White.

Muskingum took its first lead of the game two minutes into the second quarter, following a layup by Josie Payton. Its lead was short-lived as sophomore guard Rachel Horn (Millersburg, Ohio) hit a shot from beyond the arc to bring the score to 27-26.

The second quarter ended in similar fashion as the first as the final points were earned by way of a Musky 3-pointer Olivia Besancon. The Muskies took a 33-29 lead into the break.

Both squads struggled to build a lead in a third quarter that went back and forth. Muskingum registered a 3-pointer in the final seconds for the third-straight quarter, giving them a 44-42 lead at the end of the third quarter.

The Muskies found their groove from 3-point range in the final quarter of regulation. Muskingum hit three 3-pointers to pull within one with 16 seconds left. A foul then sent Annika Wachtman (Upper Arlington, Ohio) to the line as the Crusaders held a 59-58 lead. The junior guard missed the first attempt before draining the second. Muskingum received the ball with 14 seconds left in the game which proved to be more than enough time as Besancon made a layup to tie the game at 60 to force overtime.

Elli Wachtman (Upper Arlington, Ohio) scored the first point in the overtime period making one of two free throw attempts. Muskingum's Hallie Stocker drilled a 3-pointer before Ovies answered with a three-ball of her own to maintain Capital's one-point lead.

With one minute and twenty seconds left to play, a foul sent Taylor to the line as the Crusaders led by two points. Taylor came through for the Muskies, making both of her shots.

Emily Ondo (Pittsburgh, Pa.) registered a key steal in the final seconds but Capital was unable to take advantage, missing back to back shots. The Muskies sealed the game with a jump shot from Stocker.

Fondessy led all players with a career high 23 points. A pair of Crusaders also reached double digit point totals as Ovies, who also reached a career high, finished with 18 points and Risner scored ten.

The Crusaders return to the hardwood in the second game of a doubleheader against archrival Otterbein University at the Cap Center on Saturday. The game is set to tipoff at 3 p.m.
