HARRISONBURG, Va. – The Capital University women's basketball team stormed out to a 67-49 opening-day victory over Bridgewater College (Va.) in the first contest of Friday's Eastern Mennonite Tip-Off Classic.
Four of Capital's starting five finished the evening with double-digit point totals, led by senior guard Nina Napolitano (Akron, Ohio). Napolitano finished with a team-high 16 points behind a 7-for-9 shooting effort from the field. She also added a team-best four steals on the defensive end.
Also adding a strong performance on the floor was senior forward Kristen Thompson (Cincinnati, Ohio), who posted a double-double effort behind 14 points and 15 rebounds. In addition, Thompson added two assists, one steal and one block.
Capital (1-0) jumped out to a 9-0 lead before Bridgewater put its first points on the board, but the Eagles kept the deficit manageable after the first quarter, trailing 20-11. The Crusaders made a huge defensive stand and allowed just three points to Bridgewater, all coming off of free throws. Bridgewater missed all 11 field goal attempts in the second quarter while Capital put up 14 points to extend its lead to 34-14 heading into the next stoppage.
The Crusaders continued to put up good offensive numbers, and despite the Eagles outscoring them 24-19 in the third quarter, Capital kept pounding away with 33 points in the third and fourth quarters, combined.
Leading all scorers was Bridgewater's Jessica Lam, who finished with 21 points on 7-for-12 shooting and seven free-throw makes. She also had a game-high six steals.
Bridgewater (0-1) was unable to get any help from its 3-point game, going 0-for-8 from behind the arc and just 36.5 percent from the field. Capital forced 29 Eagles turnovers, leading to 24 Crusaders points.
Senior Simonne Gage (Dayton, Ohio) had a complete night, finishing the game with 10 points, five assists, four rebounds, and chipped in a pair of steals from the point guard position.
Senior Jenna Erwin (Springfield, Ohio) rounded out the starters with double-digit point totals, rattling off 12 points.
Capital will complete its stay at the EMU Tip-Off Classic when its plays the hosts at Yoder Arena on Saturday, Nov. 14 at 4 p.m.
