COLUMBUS, Ohio – Capital University Softball dropped a pair of games on Wednesday afternoon to Ohio Northern University. The Polar Bears defeated the Crusaders by scored of 9-0 (F/5) and 11-4 at Clowson Field.
GAME 1 - Ohio Northern 9, Capital 0 (F/5)
The Polar Bears struck first when Gabby Stewart hit her second home run of the year and first of the day in the top of the first inning. The two-out solo shot made the score 1-0 and preceded a three-run second inning that featured an RBI double by Hannah Rubel and a fielding error that allowed two runs to score.
After adding one more run in the third, the Polar Bears mounted a four-run fifth inning that featured five hits and two Capital errors. With the score 9-0, the Polar Bears retired the Crusaders in the fifth to end the game early.
Capital was held to just three hits in game one by starter Kaitlin Surdjei (W, 6-4) who also struck out three. Chevonne Hayslette (L, 1-5) took the loss after allowing four runs, three earned, and three hits in her 2.0 innings of work.
GAME 2 - Ohio Northern 11, Capital 4
While ONU's runs kept coming in game two, it was Capital that drew first blood in the nightcap. Cap posted four runs before the Polar Bears' response, but the guests came back to score 11 unanswered runs after taking on the early deficit.
The Crusaders came out of the gate strong against ONU starter Stacey Walters with three consecutive base knocks to start the game. Alyx Slusher led the game off with the double off the center field wall, followed by Morgan Fadel's single down the left field line. Chevonne Hayslett (Miamisburg, Ohio/Miamisburg) then came up and hit the left center field gap, driving home both runners to take an early lead.
In the bottom of the second Slusher's theatrics continued when she ripped a two-out triple with one runner on to add to the lead. She was then driven home by Fadel when she found the left field corner with a drive for two bases.
Ohio Northern chipped into the lead in the top of the third when Brady Guest launched a three-run homer over the center field wall off of Capital starting pitcher Kim Rega, but it was a six-run fourth inning that did the Crusaders in.
In the following frame, Hayslett (L, 1-6) came in to pitch and allowed a leadoff walk followed by a hit to right field where Hannah Martin misplayed the ball, allowing a run to score. Gabby Stewart struck again with a double to left center scoring another run, and Hailee Loughman drove two more runs home with a two-run single to right. After the six-run inning, ONU led 9-4.
Stewart hit her third home run of the season and second of the day in the top of the sixth against Brianna Reardon to wrap up the ONU scoring run.
Slusher and Fadel both went 2-for-4 with one run batted in at the top of the lineup, but the rest of the Crusaders were only able to muster three hits throughout the rest of the lineup.
Capital will have another quick turnaround for its third doubleheader in as many days when it hosts Denison University on Thursday afternoon. The Big Red and Crusaders will clash at Clowson Field with the first pitch of game one taking place at 3 p.m.
