AUSTINTOWN, Ohio – Capital University Softball began its season with eight games Florida last week and the play at the plate for first baseman Alyx Slusher matched the hot Florida temperatures. The sophomore is hitting .458 to start the season and has been named the Ohio Athletic Conference Hitter of the Week to start the year.
Slusher started her season with at least one hit in Capital's first six games and recorded a hit in seven of the eight contests. She has 11 total hits this year to lead the Crusaders and three multi-hit games. Slusher is second on the team in several key categories including doubles (4), home runs (1), RBIs (6), runs (4) and at-bats (24). She is also tied for the team lead with six walks.
After going 1-for-2 in each of Capital's first two games, the Rockford, Ohio native went 2-for-3 on Feb. 26 against the Institute of Technology and led off the game with a home run. Against the Milwaukee School of Engineering on Feb. 28, she recorded a season-high three hits and earned two RBIs.
Following her first hitless game of the year, Slusher responded by going 2-for-4 against Neumann University on March 1 and smacked a bases-loaded double that helped Capital nearly complete a nine-run comeback against the Knights.
In addition to her play at the plate, Slusher has played an error-free first base in her first year starting at the position.
The Crusaders, who are 3-5 overall this year, will be back in action on Friday, March 15 with a doubleheader at Hanover College starting at 3:30 p.m. Capital will then play at Franklin College (Ind.) on March 16 at 12 p.m.
