CLERMONT, Fla. – The Capital University softball team took to the field for day two in Florida. The Cap offense exploded for a total of 26 hits combined as it knocked off Milwaukee School of Engineering 11-3 and Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, 5-3.
Game 1 – Capital 11, MSOE 3
Junior Bailey Walter (Ashland, Ohio / Crestview) came up with a huge play as she threw out a MSOE runner who tried to score from second on a single to center field.
Walter led off the top of the fourth inning with a triple down the right field line. Senior Marisa Koss (Ostrander, Ohio / Buckeye Valley) hit a pitch high and deep to right field, to allow Walter to tag up and score from third. Capital wasn't done there, Senior Kat Boyer (Huber Heights, Ohio / Wayne) and sophomore Chevy Hayslett (Miamisburg, Ohio / Miamisburg East) hit back-to-back doubles to left field. Boyer earned two RBIs and Hayslett picked up one RBI. The Crusaders led 4-0 after four innings.
In the top of the fifth inning, Boyer hit a two-out single that scored two more runs. After a Hayslett walk, junior Pam Vickers (Sagamore Hills, Ohio / Nordonia) knocked in a run with an RBI single to left field. Senior Natalie Mabry (Grove City, Ohio / Grove City) drew a walk that brought in another run. Walter had a good eye at the plate and walked to score another run. Koss was hit by a pitch but helped Cap score another run. Cap scored six runs on four hits to extend its lead to 10-0.
MSOE picked up three runs when Emily Snow doubled to deep left that cleared the bases.
Capital added one run in the top of the seventh when Vickers stole second and Walter scored beating the throw from the shortstop. For the game Capital scored 11 runs on 12 hits. Senior Sarah Jasinski (Englewood, Ohio / Northmont) went 3-for-4 and scored two runs. Boyer had two hits and had a game-high four RBIs. Senior Amber Martinelli (Allison Park, Pa. / Hampton) got the start in the circle for Cap and improved to 2-0 on the season.
Game 2 – Capital 5, Rose-Hulman 3
Capital started game two with three consecutive hits, by freshman Morgan Fadel (Broadview Heights, Ohio / Brecksview-Broadview), Walter and then Koss. Fadel scored on the Koss single. Junior Haleigh Luce (Greenville, Ohio / Greenville) recorded a two-out single that scored Koss from third. Hayslett added a single that scored Boyer from third.
Rose-Hulman got one run back in the bottom of the first to cut the Cap lead to 3-1. The Fightin' Engineers tied the game in the top of the third on a Morgan Dreyer double that scored two runs.
The Crusaders responded with a run in the bottom of the third when Hayslett picked up another RBI with a single that allowed Jasinski to score. Cap added another run when Koss singled to center field. Capital scored five runs on 14 hits.
Rose-Hulman scored three runs on 10 hits. Jenny Miller tallied two hits on three at bats for the Fightin' Engineers.
Hayslett went 3-for-3 with two RBIs to lead Cap. Walter and Vickers each added two hits. Freshman Kayla Wild (Tecumseh, Mich. / Tecumseh) achieved her first collegiate victory. Wild pitched five innings and scattered four hits. She struck out seven batters.
With the victories, Capital improved to 3-1 on the season. The Crusaders return to action on Thursday when they battle Waynesburg University at 2 p.m. and Augustana College at 4:30 p.m
