CLERMONT, Fla. --The Capital University Softball team continued play at the National Training Center on Tuesday, facing off against Houghton College and Hanover College. The Crusaders took both games, defeating Houghton (0-3) 11-3, before escaping with a 4-3 victory over Hanover (3-2).
Vs. Houghton College
The Crusaders came out swinging against Houghton as senior catcher Maura Rose (Linden, Pa.) smacked a home run down the left line to give the Capital a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning.
Rose's impact was felt again in the fourth inning when she doubled to left field, bringing in two runs. With Rose on second base, Marisa Koss (Ostrander, Ohio) hit a homer of her own to increase Capital's lead to 6-1.
The Highlanders attempted to slow Capital's momentum in the bottom of the third inning, when Bailey Shattell singled down the left line to score Adrean Tiffany from third base. With the bases loaded Julia Jennings (Dover, Ohio) caught a pop up to end Houghton's threat to take the lead.
Capital put together another solid inning that began when senior outfielder Kelsey Swain (Pickerington, Ohio) stole second base after being walked to first. During the next at bat, LeAnna Cotton (Okeechobee, Fla.) reached first after an error by the shortstop, which allowed Swain to round third base for the score.
The Crusaders were able to score 3 more runs in the inning to extend its lead to 10-3.
Rose led Capital with four RBI and two hits. Brooklyn Staten (Grove City, Ohio), Rose, Koss, and Cotton each had two runs apiece.
Senior pitcher Brooke Billings (Clyde, Ohio) earned the win allowing seven hits and recording five strikeouts.
Vs. Hanover College
Capital earned its second win of the day against Hanover College. Rose began the scoring again as she singled down the left line to score State from second.
Trailing 1-0 the Panthers added a run of their own when Sidney Powers was walked with the bases loaded. Senior pitcher Alyssa Patznick (Newark, Ohio) struck out Gabrielle Ritchey to end the inning.
Swain put the Crusaders on top, doubling to left field to bring in junior outfielder Ashley Knowles (Canton, Ohio) for the score. The run increased Capital's lead to 4-2 at the top of the seventh inning.
Mikala Poe helped the Panthers pull within one run as she doubled to shortstop to bring in Danielle Merrick for the score. With the bases loaded and two outs, Hanover brought in Sidney Powers to pinch hit. Jennings fielded Powers' ground ball and passed it to Therese Becker (South Euclid, Ohio) to complete the victory.
Patznick recorded her second win at pitcher, improving her record to 2-0 on the season. The senior pitcher registered four strikeouts.
The win marks Capital's third straight win, improving its record to 3-1. With the day off tomorrow, the Crusaders resume play on Thursday with rematches against Alma College at 9 p.m. and Hanover College at 11 a.m.
