Capital Men’s Cross Country Competes at Battle of Columbus

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Capital University Men's Cross Country began its 2018 campaign at Otterbein University on Friday in the annual Battle of Columbus meet featuring the Crusaders, Cardinals and Ohio Domincan University Panthers.

Capital's runners were paced by freshman Grant Ward, who completed the 5K-course in 18:16.6 for a 22nd-place finish. Finishing just second behind Ward was one of the team's veterans, Nathan Hutchins. The junior managed a time of 18:35.0, a new personal record for a 5K by 22 seconds.

Just a spot behind Hutchins came another freshman, Daniel McPherson, with a mark of 18:46.0 in his collegiate debut. Senior Andrew Rus crossed the finish line 12 seconds behind McPherson, stopping the clock at 18:57.0. Jonas Pyle, a sprinter-turned-distance runner came home right on Rus' heels with a time of 19:19.2 in his cross country debut and a 28th=place mark.

The Crusaders will have a week off before heading to Bethany College to take place in the Bethany Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 8.
