AUSTINTOWN, Ohio – The Ohio Athletic Conference's track & field coaches have picked the Capital University men's and women's track & field teams to each finish seventh in the outdoor season, the conference announced on Thursday.
The women's side garnered 36 total points and the men's squad earned 33. The Ohio Northern University women were picked to finish first in the conference with 81 points, including five first-place votes. The University of Mount Union and Otterbein University were voted second and third with 69 and 65 points, respectively. Three first-place votes went to Mount Union and the remaining two went to the Cardinals.
John Carroll University, Baldwin Wallace University and Heidelberg University round out the next group of school with 60, 44 and 42 points. The trio of Muskingum University (24), Wilmington College (20) and Marietta College (nine) make up the bottom of the conference.
On the men's side, Mount Union gained nine first-place votes and 81 total points. John Carroll earned the only other first-place vote and totaled 70 points. Ohio Northern (68), Otterbein (57), Heidelberg (48) and Baldwin Wallace (38) were also picked ahead of Capital. Marietta, Wilmington and Muskingum round out the bottom of the league with 22, 20 and 13 points, respectively.
In last month's OAC Indoor Championships, the women finished in seventh and the men placed sixth. In the OAC Outdoor Championships last year, the women's finished sixth and the men came in eighth.
Senior jumper Logan Allison (Gallipolis, Ohio/Gallia Academy) is coming off of conference titles in the triple jump and high jump competitions at the OAC Championships and last week became a three-time All-American in the triple jump. Senior thrower Jason Coon (Bernville, Pa./Schuylkill Valley) also earned the titles of All-American and conference champion in the indoor shot put. In 2017, Allison was named the conference's most outstanding sprint athlete and most outstanding field athlete.
Sophomore Taylor Manivanh (Grove City, Ohio/Central Crossing) also qualified for nationals in the triple jump and was named a USTFCCCA All-Region honoree in the triple jump, long jump and 60-meter dash. Manivanh was an outdoor All-OAC selection in the triple jump last year. Manivanh, Niamani Mayes (Cincinnati, Ohio/Walnut Hills) and Hunter Mouser (London, Ohio/London) each earned individual indoor All-OAC selections this indoor season.
The two teams will get their outdoor seasons underway this weekend in Charlotte, N.C. at the 49er Classic hosted by the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. A full tentative schedule for the three-day meet can be found here.
