COLUMBUS, Ohio – Despite rain suspending play for over an hour, the Capital University men's tennis team persevered with a victory in the first round of the 2016 Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament. The Crusaders defeated the Purple Raiders of the University of Mount Union by a score of 5-2 on Wednesday afternoon at the CU Tennis Courts.
The bottom end of both the Capital singles and doubles lineups got the job done and ended the match early. Before the rain started coming down, the Crusaders' second and third doubles flights each notched big wins. In the third doubles pairing, junior Dale Booher (Hartville, Ohio) and sophomore Santino DiMichaelangelo (Westerville, Ohio/St. Francis Desales) rolled to an 8-1 win over Bryce Payne and Tyler Tareshawty. Shortly thereafter, Capital seniors Luke Buchanan (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville Central) and Jared Judson (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Jerome) downed Mount's Jackson Schneider and Matt Bringman, 8-3.
After the Purple Raiders took victory on court one of doubles play, Capital went into singles with a 2-1 lead. Shortly after singles matches began, rain began to fall and forced a stall of play lasting nearly one and one-half hours.
After play resumed, Capital rattled off three wins in spots four, five and six in its lineup. Judson was the only Crusader to finish a set before the delay, but quickly dispensed of Scott Fletcher in the sixth spot, 6-1, 6-0 to get Capital up 3-1.
Capital, now 11-12 overall, will advance to the OAC Tournament Semifinals to play the winner of No. 1 John Carroll University versus No. 8 Marietta College. That match will take place on Wednesday, barring any weather delays. Capital will play JCU or Marietta on Friday, May 6 at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason, Ohio at 4:30 p.m.
