Men’s Tennis Hits Snag in Orlando

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Capital University men's tennis team embarked on a week-long journey to Orlando, Fla. where it is playing five matches in four days, including two doubleheaders. In the first leg of its stay in The Sunshine State, the Crusaders have hit a rough patch with three losses, though have competed admirably.

Despite an 8-1 loss to the Avengers of ASA College-Miami, the Crusaders competed with a strong field of international players. Sophomore C.J. Martin (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) pulled away with the lone win for Capital, defeating Luis Espinoza in the number-three singles match by scores of 7-5, 6-3.

Sophomore Santino DiMichaelangelo (Westerville, Ohio/St. Francis DeSales) came close to pulling out a victory in the number-six spot after jumping out to a fast start, but fell in a tiebreaker to Pedro Ribes (0-6, 6-1, 1-0).

Senior Luke Buchanan (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville Central) and junior Dale Booher (Hartville, Ohio) teamed up as the top pairing in doubles play. The duo provided the best competition to start the contest with an 8-4 loss to Aleksa Milojica and Espinosa of ASA College.

MATCH 2 – Augustana (Ill.) 8, Capital 1  |  results
March 2, 2016

The Crusaders easily could have seen a two-point swing in the final count but were only able to come away with one win out of the three singles matches that went to a third-set tiebreaker. Freshman John Roberts (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) earned the nod in the number-six hole and outlasted Nicholas Prabhakar 6-1, 5-7, 1-0 (7) to earn Capital's lone point in the match.

Capital tested out different tandems in its second and third flight doubles matches by pairing Roberts up with sophomore Stefn Sandberg (Gahanna, Ohio/Gahanna), and Martin with senior Gian Carlo DiMichaelangelo (Westerville, Ohio/St. Francis DeSales). However, each lost by wide margins to their opposition by counts of 8-2 and 8-0, respectively.

MATCH 3 – Rose-Hulman (Ind.) 7, Capital 2  |  results
March 2, 2016

In the second match of a doubleheader held on Wednesday, Capital fared much better in singles play despite a 7-2 loss to the Fightin' Engineers of the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology.

Senior Jared Judson (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Jerome) won his fifth-flight singles match via a tiebreaker (4-6, 6-3, 1-0 [8]) over Matt Conrad. Each of the first three flights was competitive, especially in their respective first sets. Buchanan fell by a 7-5, 6-3 count to Georges Adam in the number-one spot. Brandon Benedict downed Booher 7-6 (6), 6-3, and Martin took a loss at the hands of Cam Metzger by a score of 7-5, 6-3.

Buchanan and Booher rebounded in doubles play, earning an 8-6 win in the number-one spot while the DiMichaelangelo brothers put up a spirited fight despite an 8-6 loss to Conrad and Joe Kendall. For Buchanan and Booher, it served as their first win as a pair this season.

Capital will continue its adventure in Florida with another doubleheader on Friday, March 4. The Crusaders will take on Ave Maria University (Fla.) and Clark University (Mass.) in their final matches of the mid-semester break trip.
