COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University men's tennis team opened the 2015-16 fall season with an impressive 8-1 win over Grove City College, Monday afternoon.
The Wolverines earned the first point of the match, but the defending tri-champion Crusaders stormed back and won each of the next eight matches between doubles and singles play to close out their victory. Beau Streety (Tuscon, Ariz.), Jared Judson (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Jerome) C.J. Martin (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby), and Jesse Faulker (Columbus, Ohio/St. Francis DeSales) all earned multiple wins to guide Capital (1-0).
Streety and Judson teamed up to create Capital's second-flight doubles team and took in its first point of the match, tying the score at one. The duo downed Nathan Roberts and Jon Fleet, 8-2, for the win.
Martin and Faulkner gave the Crusaders its first lead with an 8-2 doubles win in the third-flight match. Capital never gave up that lead.
After dropping their No. 1 doubles match, Luke Buchanan (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville Central) and Dale Booher (Hartville, Ohio) each bounced back with wins in their respective singles matches. Buchanan, Capital's top singles player, shut out Jon Graber in consecutive sets while Booher down Zack Spunger (6-3, 6-4) in the No. 3 singles match.
Capital's next match will be Wednesday, Sept. 16 when they hit the road for Denison University (Granville, Ohio). First service between the Crusaders and Big Red is set for 4:30 p.m.
