The Capital University men's tennis team nearly advanced to the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament final for the first time in program history Friday but was defeated 5-4 by Baldwin Wallace in a tournament semifinal match at Lindner Tennis Center in Mason, Ohio.
The Crusaders (11-7 overall) won two of three doubles matches before the Yellow Jackets (19-3) grabbed four of six singles contest, claiming the deciding point at No. 5 singles.
Junior Kenny Duncan (Poland, Ohio) and sophomore Spencer Walter (Hilliard, Ohio) won 8-6 at No. 2 doubles, and sophomore Jared Judson (Dublin, Ohio) and freshmen Beau Streety (Tucson, Ariz.) were victorious at the third position, 8-2, to give Capital a 2-1 advantage.
Walter and Judson each claimed singles matches for the Crusaders. Walter knocked off Brad Minrovic 6-2, 6-1 at the fourth slot, while Judson recorded a 7-6 (1), 6-3 triumph at No. 6.
Streety won the first set at the fifth position but was barely outlasted 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.
Capital returns its entire starting lineup to the roster in 2014. Streety led the team in singles wins with 17, while sophomore Luke Buchanan (Westerville, Ohio) and freshman Dale Booher (Hartville, Ohio) totaled a team-best 12 doubles victories playing together, primarily at the No. 1 slot.
