Men’s Tennis Closes Regular Season With Win at Rival Otterbein

The Capital University men's tennis team produced at the bottom of its singles lineup Saturday to hang on for a 5-4 victory over cross-town rival Otterbein in the Ohio Athletic Conference regular season finale for both teams.


After taking two of three doubles matches to start the contest, the Crusaders (12-5 overall, 7-2 OAC) took singles matches at the Nos. 4-6 spots to secure the narrow victory.


With the win, Capital is the No. 2 seed in the OAC Tournament and will host Heidelberg Carroll in next week's quarterfinals. Otterbein fell to 14-6 and 6-3, and will be the tournament's fourth seed.


Freshmen Gian Carlo DiMichelangelo (Westerville, Ohio) and Jared Judson (Dublin, Ohio) were vital to helping the Crusaders secure the critical victory. The two paired up at No. 3 doubles and defeated Jacob DeVore and Andrew Sutter of the Cardinals 8-6.


Freshmen Luke Buchanan (Westerville, Ohio) and Spencer Walter (Hilliard, Ohio) registered the other win, defeating David Seckel and Will Wilson at the top doubles spot by a 9-7 count.


DiMichelangelo and Judson continued their strong play in singles, recording straight-set wins at the Nos. 5 and 6 slots, respectively. DiMichelangelo bested Kevin Adell 7-5, 6-1, while Judson downed Tyler Gibbons 6-4, 7-5.


Walter also translated his solid doubles play into singles competition, defeating Zach McDivitt 6-2, 7-6 (4).


Capital's match against Heidelberg is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Capital Tennis Courts.
