Men’s Tennis Shuts Out Mount St. Joseph

The Capital University men's tennis team started off the 2012-13 season with a dominant performance Monday, sweeping Mount St. Joseph 9-0 in a non-conference affair in Cincinnati, Ohio.Men's Tennis action shot

The Crusaders (1-0 overall) lost just four games combined in three doubles matches and didn't drop a set in singles play.

Freshmen Luke Buchanan and Spencer Walter defeated Clayton Steinriede and Colin Barrett 8-1 at the No. 1 spot, while senior John Murray (Bolingbrook, Ill.; at right) and sophomore Kenny Duncan (Poland, Ohio) won by an identical score at second doubles.

Senior Doug Gugel-Bryant (Lancaster, Ohio) teamed with freshman Stephan Jeffries at No. 3 to knock off Evan Lolli and Chris Hemmingsen by an 8-2 count.

Four freshmen flanked Murray and Duncan in the singles lineup. Buchanan, Duncan, Walter, Murray and Jeffries each earned victories, while freshman Gian Carlo DiMichelangelo defeated Lolli 6-1, 6-1 at No. 6 in his collegiate debut.

Last spring, the Lions (0-1) defeated Capital 6-3 in a dual match on April 13 in Columbus.

The Crusaders return to action this Friday and Saturday at the Wittenberg Invitational in Springfield, Ohio.
