Late Mount Union Goal Seals Loss for Capital on the Road

ALLIANCE, Ohio – After going ahead early in the game, Capital University Men's Soccer (9-5, 3-2 OAC) conceded two second-half goals, including the game-winner in the final two minutes, to the University of Mount Union Purple Raiders (6-6-1, 2-2-1 OAC) in Capital's 2-1 loss on Saturday night.

With the game tied at one and overtime on the horizon, Mount Union's Stephen Dages scored his fifth goal of the season with fewer than two minutes remaining in the contest to give the Purple Raiders a 2-1 lead.

Capital had two shot attempts in the final two minutes but neither were on goal and the final whistle sounded with a one goal deficit on the scoreboard for Capital.

The only goal for Capital came in the 38th minute, a Mount Union own goal.

Mount Union had a prime chance to equalize in the 44th minute after being awarded a penalty but Aaron Liezert's shot was saved by Justin Niswonger (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville). Niswonger finished the match with three saves.

The equalizer for Mount Union eventually did come in the 68th minute, a goal from Kevin Blackley assisted by Stephen Dages.

In the 74th minute, Mount Union's Josh Lewis was shown a red card giving Capital a man advantage but the Crusaders were unable to capitalize.  

Chewy Gordon (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville Central) and Jamie Robson (Canal Winchester, Ohio/Canal Winchester) led Capital with three shots each. The Crusaders outshot Mount Union 13-10.

With the loss, Capital falls to 3-2 in Ohio Athletic Conference play. The Crusaders will look to get back in the win column when they host Marietta College on Tuesday, Oct. 17 at Purmort Field at Bernlohr Stadium. Kickoff for that game is scheduled for 7 p.m.
