ADA, Ohio – On a windy and rainy night in Ada, Capital University Men's Soccer (8-4, 2-1 OAC) needed almost the full 90 minutes to take down Ohio Northern University (8-4-1, 1-2 OAC) but the Crusaders are coming home with a 2-1 win thanks to a header from Dominic Zumpone (Sunbury, Ohio/Big Walnut) that found the back of the net.
In the 87th minute with the score tied 1-1, Greg Knox (Oxford, Mich./Oxford) launched the ball into the ONU box on a throw-in. With a crowd of people around the ball, the six-foot-two-inch Zumpone rose above the scrum and redirected the throw into the goal to put Cap up by one. The goal was the first of the season for teh senior who has been a key piece of Capital's defensive backline all year.
The Polar Bears had two shots inside the last two minutes but the Crusaders were able to successfully defend their goal and earn their second Ohio Athletic Conference win of the season.
Capital got the scoring started just four minutes after the opening kick with a goal from Tyler Wujczyk (Berverly Hills, Mich./Brothers Rice). Chewy Gordon (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville Central) crossed the ball in to Wujczyk from the right side and Wujczyk deposited it into the corner of the goal to give Cap a 1-0 lead.
Ohio Northern's offense kept the pressure on Capital though and that paid off in the 70th minute when J.J. Fortner was able to control the ball in traffic and score from 10 yards out.
For the game, Capital was outshot 21-13, including 11-5 in the first half. However, Cap keeper Justin Niswonger (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville) turned away just about everything that got to him and ended the game with eight saves.
Capital will return home and host Muskingum University on Oct. 11. Kickoff at Purmort Field at Bernlohr Stadium is scheduled for 7 p.m.
