Collins Scores Twice as Cap Reels in Fighting Muskies

NEW CONCORD, Ohio – The Capital University men's soccer team was in action Tuesday afternoon against Muskingum University at Sherman Field. Cap was led by Trevor Collins with two goals.

 The Crusaders came out firing, taking five shots in the first nine minutes.

At the 25-minute mark, heads-up defense by freshman Trevor Collins (Powell, Ohio/ Olentangy Liberty) led to an early goal. Collins intercepted a pass from the Muskingum defender and then ripped a shot from 20-yards out and beat the keeper for his second goal on the season.

Muskingum scored two goals before the half. First goal by Nick Koch and the second by Colin Federer.

Capital responded with two goals early in the second half to reclaim the lead. Senior Hunter Booth (Liberty Township, Ohio) sent a ball up from midfield deep into the box. Senior Cheyn Roux (Davidson, N.C.) was on the receiving end of the pass and beat the keeper, tying the game 2-2. Just 14 seconds later, Roux crossed the ball in front of goal where Collins was able to head it in for his second goal of the game.

At the 64-minute mark, the Fighting Muskies fouled a Capital attacker inside the box, resulting in a yellow card and a penalty kick. Junior Calvin Saunders (Winston-Salem, N.C.) beat the keeper low near post.

Muskingum's Zach Schmauch scored, which cut the Capital lead to 4-3.

Cap responded to extend the lead 5-3. Senior Colton Phillips (Bellbrook, Ohio) sent a cross into the box, where freshman Tristan Bentley (Cincinnati, Ohio) was able to finish for his first career goal.

Collins led the way for Cap as he scored two goals on two shots. Senior Chewy Gordon had a game-high six shots. Roux finished with one goal on five shots.

Junior Justin Niswonger (Centerville, Ohio) picked up his 10th win of the season and improves to 10-0-1.

For the match, Capital outshot Muskingum 32-4. Cap also had the advantage in corner kicks, 5-2.

Cap improves to 11-1-1 overall and 3-0-1 in OAC play. The Crusaders return to action on Saturday night as the host they Purple Raiders of the University of Mount Union. The match is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
