Offensive Explosion Propels Cap Over Wittenberg

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University men's soccer team was in action Sunday evening as they took on Wittenberg University. Cap was led by Cheyn Roux with three goals, as Capital wins 6-1.

At the 13-minute mark, after the ball had been kicked out of bounds by a Wittenberg defender, freshman Greg Knox (Oxford, Mich.) launched a long throw into the box. After bouncing, the ball reached senior Cheyn Roux (Davidson, N.C.) and he was able to score in the empty net after the keeper tried to play the throw into the box. Capital took an early 1-0 lead.

The Tigers fouled a Crusader inside the box at the 25-minute mark, resulting in a penalty kick for Cap. Senior Jacob Pulliam (Westerville, Ohio/ Westerville North) took the penalty kick and beat the keeper who guessed the wrong direction. The goal extended the Capital lead to 2-0.

Pulliam scored again, this time on a header. Knox threw a long throw in again, Pulliam outjumped everyone inside the box and was able to beat the keeper to the near post. The Crusaders took a 3-0 lead into the half.

Four minutes into the second half, freshman Trevor Collins (Powell, Ohio/ Olentangy Liberty) blasted a ball towards the goal. The Tiger keeper made a diving save to prevent Collins from scoring, but the ball went right to Roux who was looking at a wide open net. Roux made the easy chip for a goal which extended the Cap lead to 4-0.

At the 60-minute mark Collins stole the ball from Wittenberg. He then beat two defenders and sent the ball ahead to Roux. Roux took the pass in stride, and put the ball into the lower left side of the goal.  That goal gave Roux the hat trick and Capital a 5-0 lead.

Wittenberg found the back of the net at the 69-minute mark. Chad Brewer beat the Cap goalie high far post.

Sophomore Luke Morais (Westerville, Ohio/ Westerville South) showed off his ball handling skills as two defenders and the Tigers goalie had him surrounded. He managed to juke the keeper and then send a pass to a wide open Colton Philips. Phillips, a Bellbrook, Ohio native, scored into the empty net giving him his first goal of the season. This made the final score 6-1.

Junior Justin Niswonger (Centerville, Ohio) improved to 2-0 in goal for Cap. Niswonger finished the game with four saves and didn't allow a goal.

As a team, Capital outshot Wittenberg 23-11. Cap also had the advantage in corner kicks, 9-3.

The Crusaders improve to 3-1 on the season. Capital will return to action as they travel to Denison University to battle the Big Red. The match is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 14.
